to hear. abc chief investigative correspondent brian ross that is this "nightline" exclusive. >> reporter: in the hours before dzhokhar tsarnaev was accused he revealed the why and the how of the deadly bomb attacks. and for all the power of the two explosions, for all the dramatic gunfights and for all the indications of well-trained terrorist techniques the younger brother reportedly told agents according to the authorities it was almost entirely done from the internet, homegrown with no direction from overseas. they used an al qaeda internet description of how to make a pressure cooker bomb. seth jones, a counterterror expert at the rand corporation, has analyzed the marathon attack and how it was pulled off. >> ad libbed part of it and made some decisions on a few elements of the bomb making. but what's different about this

is they took a simple recipe and then targeted a -- the boston marathon. >> reporter: why the marathon? because, officials say, it was there, essentially. and easy. not long in the planning either. >> it does appear though that the younger brother had not become involved until later in the process, perhaps a week or so before the actual attack. >> reporter: jones says the brothers seemed to have been inspired by the internet preachings of anwar al awlaki, the charismatic american-born al qaeda jihadist who has been dead now more than a year and a half. >> the older brother appeared to be the more radicalized of the two and drove both the need to conduct the attack as well as the preparation of the attack, that is, building the bombs. >> reporter: as for what drove tamerlan? his younger brother claims it was hatred of america. >> he may have been angry about other things, about the status

of his life. but he increasingly turned to jihadism, was radicalized, because among other things, u.s. foreign policy decisions overseas and that especially afghanistan and iraq. >> reporter: what the younger brother is reported to be saying is consistent with what we heard in the neighborhood about the older brother tamerlan and his disgust with things american and christian. >> he said the bike is a cheap copy off the koran. he said most american wars are excused off the bible. >> reporter: and it also emerged there might be a link to an unsolved murder two years ago. prosecutors said monday that they are investigating whether tamerlan was involved in the brutal murder of three young men, one of whom was his roommate. the three were found with their throats slashed, covered in marijuana and cash. federal agents have been looking at the six-month trip tamerlan took last year to russia at a time that rebel groups there

carried out a number of violent attacks in thing dega stan region. last year alone, dagestan last 115 police officers in nearly 300 terror attacks. two years ago this street was obliterated by a car bomb. >> reporter: according to officials, chechnya had nothing to do with the marathon attack in the view of the younger brother. >> it doesn't at this point appear to be a chechnya thing. >> reporter: neighbors say tamerlan was a changed man when he returned to the u.s., swearing off tobacco and alcohol, linking to extremist jihadist videos, and saying, i don't have any american friends, i don't understand them. >> i would say it is self-radicalization. these are individuals who may have some connections overseas. but the primary radicalization is in places like the united states. >> reporter: the fbi may get additional answers from tamerlan's wife, seen over the weekend leaving the family

apartment. a rhode island native, she converted to islam and changed her name from katherine to karima. because she lived in the same cambridge apartment where authorities believe the two brothers hatched their plot, she could provide clues about whether others were involved. her family lawyer said she was shocked to learn of her husband's role and had no idea until the fbi released the surveillance pictures of her husband and named him a suspect. in the gun fight with police on thursday night that killed tamerlan, he and his brother were well-armed with at least five other explosive devices, some of which they threw at the please in pursuit. >> it does appear that they were potentially interested in conducting follow-on attacks. that may have been why they didn't try to flee as fast as they did. >> reporter: today, federal agents were looking for more bombs or a possible bomb factory. hours after the younger brother talked to federal agents, authorities swarmed an area

behind the cambridge drugstore where the brothers' father used to repair cars. with no links to al qaeda or chechnyan rebels authorities believe they are dealing with a new, equally dangerous trend, the internet-trained terrorist. >> this is now kind of the al qaeda modus operandi now. not relying only on braves but trying to get people to do it, to self-radical it's and to build their own bombs without having to come to a training camp in pakistan or yemen or other locations. >> reporter: monday the mother of the two brothers told abc news from russia that tamerlan was always the son to call the shots, that he was the leader. after the bombing he called her in russia to say, everything is okay thanks to allah. brian ross joins me now. based on what they're hearing from this young man, safe to say there is no foreign plot here?

>> best they can tell in the initial assessment. it is the twisted thinking of a self radicalized young man. the only real help is the younger brother, as far as they can tell. >> speaking of the younger brother who is talking inside the walls of the hospital behind us, can they take what he says at face value? >> not at all. it's in his interest to minimize his own role. they continue to look for any possible overseas connections or a wider cell but so far, no indication of that. >> are they finding any hints of imminent threats out there? >> no current threats at the moment. >> thanks for your work. coming up here from stun grenades to robots. inside the search for a 19-year-old who was briefly the most wanted man in manager. girl vo: i'm pretty conservative. very logical thinker. this special edition of "nightline," inside the capture continues from boston with dan harris. >> we've all seen the pictures, the iconic images from the story, the surveillance tapes, the two young specced bombers walking through the crowds on marathon monday. the extraordinary police video of the final moments before the capture of the younger brother. dzhokhar tsarnaev. we've all seen the pictures, as i said. but tonight we're hearing the real story. as if the images of the young man with the backwards baseball hat, feet away from an 8-year-old boy who had no idea he was about to die. as if these images weren't chilling enough, today in a

newly filed criminal complaint, law enforcement officials described how 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev calmly placed a bag allegedly containing a homemade bomb made out of a pressure cooker and packed with nails and bbs on the ground in a crowd full of innocent bystanders and simply waited. when the first bomb, allegedly placed by his brother, went off nearby, investigators say they could see everybody in the crowd react with alarm. everybody except tsarnaev, who waited a few seconds, walked away, and allegedly set off the sec bomb. days later he and his older brother tamerlan got in a shoot-out with police. today we learn more about the events leading up to that epic clash. according to the new criminal complaint, the night began with the brothers tsarnaev allegedly car jacking a man. the victim describes one of the brothers getting into his car

and saying, did you hear about the boston explosion? i did that. the victim says the brother then removed a magazine from his gun, displayed a bullet, and said, i am serious. the victim gave an interview in which he said, they asked me where i'm from, i told them i'm chinese, i was very scared, i asked them if they were going to hurt me, they said they won't hurt me, i was thinking, i think they'll kill me later. the brothers allegedly forced the man to hand over his atm card. these are surveillance pictures of dzhokhar calmly withdrawing money, still wearing that white hat. then the brothers drove to this shell station. one went inside to pay, the other pumped the gas. the victim took off. the guy outside the car tried to catch me using his hand, the victim told wmur, he tried to catch me but i ran very fast. less than 24 hours later, more

gunfire, shots ringing out in watertown. >> just heard what sounded like a bang. just heard what sounded like a bang. >> are you listening to tape? >> no. that's live. that's live, sean. >> reporter: his brother already dead, this was the beginning of the end for dzhokhar tsarnaev. >> we have movement in the boat. >> reporter: on this extraordinary thermal video, taken from a police helicopter, you can see the whole thing play out. there he was. that white figure right there. the most wanted man in america holed up under a tarp in a boat in a backyard. >> just sat up. he's moving, flailing about, quite a bit of movement. >> reporter: the orders went out. capture the young man alive. >> all units we do not return fire. >> reporter: officers used a robotic arm to tear the cover off the boat. >> if they're able to successfully rip that off he'll

be fully exposed. >> reporter: they threw in a series of stun grenades. these devices are not designed to injure but to create temporary blindness and deafness for two to eight seconds. after the first stun grenade, a second, then a third. after 25 minutes, tsarnaev surrendered. >> the suspect in custody. >> he was very slow, lethargic with every move he made. they could see that there was no device on his chest. >> reporter: the 19-year-old was tweeted at the scene with what authorities describe as gunshot wounds to his head, neck, legs, and hands. the nightmare was over but a long legal process was just beginning. >> there's a lot of relief. we were very concerned they wanted to kill more people. to know we have him in custody was just an incredible feeling. >> reporter: in the hospital today, tsarnaev had his first court appearance. a magistrate and the attorneys gathering around the young man's bedside. this kid who was once a

well-loved member of his high school wrestling team has now been officially charged with using and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction which makes him eligible for the ultimate punishment. >> this is a death-eligible crime. and that means the prosecutors may seek the death penalty. if they don't, he's macing the possibility of life in prison without parole. >> reporter: when asked whether he could afford an attorney, tsarnaev reportedly said or tried to say, with a gunshot wound to his throat, "no." >> the sorts of defenses you'd expect, 19 years old, he was influenced by his brother, are better defenses to not getting the death penalty than to say that he was not guilty. >> reporter: while tsarnaev was being formally charged, outside on the streets of boston, a moment of silence at 2:50 in the afternoon, the exact time the bombs went off one week ago. after it was over, an impromptu

were injured in the boston marathon bombings are in hospitals in the city of boston, two in critical condition but today doctors told us they expect everybody to survive, and in fact, they said, many of the amputees are now up and walking the hospital hol ways with the help of physical therapists. it is another sign of the remarkable resilience of boston. and gio benitez today found others. >> reporter: one week after the boston bombings, the first funeral. krystle campbell, just 29 years old, laid to rest. so many came to mourn her not everyone could get inside. there is much more mourning ahead for 8-year-old martin richard and 23-year-old lingzi lu. and sean collier.

but today the more than 200 injuries are remembered as well like adrianne haslet the dancer from "the boston herald" the blast has torn off her foot. >> we sat up and i said, wait, my foot hurts. he held up my foot and we both screamed bloody murder. i didn't feel heat from it. i just felt air and fell to the ground. >> reporter: it's a huge loss for this ballroom dance instructor. but she hasn't lost her spirit. >> it's very sad and i absolutely want to dance again. >> reporter: adrienne is vowing not only to dance again but to run in next year's boston marathon. >> i'm so blessed. i'm so lucky. >> reporter: caitlin tate. her leg was badly damaged. this photo captures the moment caitlin's friend leo saved her life. >> when you look at that incredible picture of him carrying you away, what goes through your mind? >> god had angels watching me that day. >> reporter: leo rushed caitlin to mass general hospital. >> the one thing that struck us is how many were running towards

where the bombs went off not away from it. you know. it says a lot about the people of our city. >> let's hope nothing like this ever happens again. >> reporter: and caitlin had a special visitor, president barack obama. >> reporter: what did he say to you? >> he shook our hands and told us we were strong and an inspiration to other people. >> reporter: caitlin is recovering so well, she could be released this week. what message do you have for everyone watching? >> i think that life should go on. we should continue and stay strong and -- not avoid or be scared of events. because there's dangerous people out there like this. >> reporter: life going on. today investigators finished their grim work on boylston street where the attacks happened seven days ago. and handed the famous street back to the city. just another act of courage and defiance in this proud place as it struggles to get back on its feet.
